We love ottomans! But not all ottomans are created equal… and not all rooms need the same ottoman. Don’t fret! There are so many options available pick your size, shape, fabrics and leathers, storage and more- it’s impossible to not find just the right fit for your space. Here are some tips to help narrow down the field to find exactly what you are looking for!
Size and Shape
Sizing of ottomans is directly correlated to the size of the related pieces in the room. If it is going in front of a chair it needs to fit the chair, a sofa it needs to be a cocktail ottoman, in a sectional…well there are so many different configurations out there there’s no one size fits all rule- just be proportionate.
This sectional to the right is large but doesn’t have a huge amount of space between the chaise and the sofa, this square fits perfectly.
Fabrics and Leather
An ottoman is a great opportunity for an accent fabric to tie the whole room together. Coordinate or match fabrics to accent pillows on the sofa or chair for a polished look! It’s tempting to always go fabric on an ottoman-to add a punch of pattern-but don’t overlook leather.
Leather on an ottoman is a great way to add texture and break up an all upholstered room. Leather is also super durable and easy to clean-a great material for an ottoman that will double as a coffee table. The Metal Works collection by Legacy Furniture shown above has a leather topped ottoman with a removal train inset, perfect for the ottoman/coffee table combo! Another great combo is to go with leather/fabric collaged ottoman.
The storage ottoman to the right by King Hickory is a great way to add a dash of leather, just on the base and contrast with a fun fabric or you can do it in reverse!
Storage and Cubes
Ottoman cubes are so fun and versatile! They can float around the room as needed or be bunched together in front of a sofa or sectional. In great fabrics and leathers these cubes are always a hit!
Need to maximize storage? Ottomans have you covered. The above storage ottoman by Bassett Furniture is clean, crisp and chic. Available in multiples sizes and fabrics storage can find it’s way into any room!

Modern is trending and we are embracing it! Many confuse the two style terms modern and contemporary. In our opinion, modern is a style of its own, and contemporary can encompass many different styles that are current or en vogue.
The rule of thumb for modern design is “form follows function.” Keep your space uncluttered, light and simple. Here are some tips to embrace the trend in your home.
Pack-up-the-clutter! A modern room has clean lines and clear focus on form. When your room is covered with knick-knacks it is hard to appreciate the lines of your furniture. Keep it minimal and keep it interesting. Check out this Before & After designed by one of Bennington Furniture’s own..
By removing the large entertainment center, and replacing it with a clean lined sofa, this added more seating and brought the focus where it should be- on the fireplace! Cleaning up the “stuff” and keeping it simple by using a light neutral color palette with dark accents made the space feel more open. A woven hide rug and teak bunching cubes topped the room off with some organic texture for interest.
Go Metal! Modern design honors form and function by keeping building materials in plain view. What better way to show off structure than with the mix of metal. The below dining room table from Hooker Furniture exhibits the form and function of modernism and we just love it.
Keep It Primary! Black, white and neutrals with a dash of vibrant primary colors make up the modern color wheel. For example adding a large canvas like this one from Mercana can be the perfect amount of impact and add that touch of color to your modern room.
These are our tips to help you transform or introduce modern elements into your home. For more ideas or design suggestions visit one of our locations.
As the temperature rises cool colors reign; to counter the heat, these crisp blues will keep you cool and get your home ready for the season!
Blue is in. In all its forms: navy, indigo, turquoise and cobalt. Accessories are a great way to keep a room fresh and up-to-date with the latest trend without having to replace every piece. Start small: lamps, pillows, area rugs, vase or accents.
Combining these small pieces will transform your space. Throw pillows and small touches below transform this neutral space.
Next, consider consoles, hall tables, or accent furniture for small pieces that can have great impact. Like the Regatta Blue Bombe hall table below, strategically placed, this burst of blue will make any hall feel breezy!
Thinking of taking blue to the next level? Go big with a blue upholstered sectional. The Craftmaster sectional below anchors the room. Styled with light grey pillows and paired with clean accents in start white and black this space achieves a cool and crisp timeless look.
Don’t forget about one of our favorites- bedding! Pillows, shams, comforters and throws in every shade of blue will transform your bedroom into an oasis this summer!
